8 Nights of Candles Burning Bright

8 Nights of Candles Burning Bright

As we light our first candles, and the light begins to grow, think about the 8th Night and a new light for Ethan.

We knew there was enough oil to last the first night, but it was the second night that something wonderful was beginning to happen…

As we light our candles on the third night of Chanukah, we think about three actions: courage, re-dedication…and rebuilding. That's what Eighth Night for Ethan is all about.

Shabbat Shalom. The shammas kindles the light. Our four …

To a land that I will show you

Day 104

From Debbie Friedman’s song, L’chi Lach:
L’chi lach, to a land that I will show you
Lech l’cha, to a place you do not know
L’chi lach, on your journey I will bless you
And you shall be a blessing, l’chi lach.

In the opening of this week’s Torah portion—Lech Lecha Genesis 12:1-17:27—G-d instructs Abraham to take his family and leave his native land and his father’s house for a land that G-d would show him, promising to make of him a great nation, bless him, and make his …

Adding New “Ology” Groups to Team Ethan

Day 91

In the past couple of weeks, two new “ology” groups joined Team Ethan, urology and nephrology (kidney). Since Ethan is not yet able to tell us when he’s in specific pain, the doctors use monitors and scans to rule out or confirm any physical sources for his discomfort when it appears his vocalizations become more persistent and ongoing.

This morning, Ethan is being treated for kidney stones. Tests have shown higher levels of calcium in his urine, and ultrasound images show he has built a small …

The Sukkah that Love Built

The Sukkah that Love Built

Day 82

Sukkot has been a joyous holiday for us for years. It is a harvest holiday of thanksgiving which falls just a few days after the High Holy Days have ended. It is a joyful week following an immensely introspective time. Something to truly look forward to after so many days spent in prayer.

Many years ago, we purchased a Sukkah kit. What arrived in the mail was a small box. I remember looking at it and saying to Scott, “If this is all there is …

Ethan Update

Day 79

It has been quite some time since we wrote about Ethan specifically.  As we have said many times, his healing progress should be measured in weeks and months, not days.  We are affectionately calling this Ethan Time.  With this context, Ethan has made so much progress in the past few weeks and definitely the past few months.

Ethan just passed 11 weeks in the hospital. He continues to breathe on his own without assistance from a respirator or additional oxygen. He also swallows on his …
